The New Practice

EYESPOT is a gorgeous luxury boutique optical in Chestnut Hill, MA. Find out more about this practice I recently joined including their "Give a Pair. Get a Pair" Mission and Global Partnership to help provide the gift of sight to children in Nepal.

A few weeks ago I mentioned to you all that I was joining a new practice, so I wanted to take some time to tell you all about this incredible new work venture. For those of you who may be new to my blog, let me professionally reintroduce myself. I am an optometrist (or primary eye care provider and treater of disorders of the eye and visual system) and have been practicing for six years. To say I love what I do would be an understatement. I always knew I wanted to go into some field of health care, but I had always been especially intrigued by the human brain's method of sensation and perception, so going into the field of optometry felt very natural and right. And even after six years I still feel as passionate about my career as the excited college graduate that first set foot in optometry school.

Another reason I selected optometry as my field of study was that I wanted a career that allowed me to have control of my schedule. Since I also always knew I wanted to be a mother, I wanted to be in a profession that gave me the option to work part-time when my children were young. So for the first year and few months of Bennett's life I only practiced on the weekends and spent the week cuddling with him as much a possible and stumbling through the creation of this blog. It was time with him I never took for granted and for which I will forever be so grateful.

We live in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Brookline, and we would often visit The Street, a beautiful collection of shops and restaurants near our home. While there I would often take notice of EYESPOT, an optical boutique with beautiful store frontage that also displayed the words "Give a Pair. Get a Pair."  I would come to learn this is the slogan for the practice's Global Vision Partnership with Birat Eye Hospital; for every pair of glasses purchased at EYESPOT, an eye exam and pair of glasses are provided for a child in Nepal.  As Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, this partnership provides children an opportunity to see and go to school.  There are many times I wanted to walk in and learn more about this impressionable optical, but I kept putting it off because I always had Bennett with me and knew he wouldn't give me as much time to inquire about the boutique and their mission as I would like.

At the beginning of this summer, however, Brian and I came to the decision that our family was ready for me to add a couple more days to my work week. Since I couldn't get EYESPOT out of my head, I finally decided to walk in one day with Bennett and learn a little bit more, and it turned out that not only was EYESPOT the most beautiful gallery of eyewear I had ever seen, but they also had an established medical eye practice headed by the lovely, residency-trained Glenda Savitz, OD. I also found out EYESPOT was founded by Dr. Jorge Arroyo, a talented, highly-respected retinal surgeon and one of Boston's Top Ophthalmologists. As a retinal specialist who thoroughly understands the importance of early detection and intervention of eye disease to prevent vision loss, Dr. Arroyo made it a point to equip the office for the best possible medical eye care.

I seriously could not believe my good fortune. Not only was this dreamy practice a mile from my home and equipped with the technology to provide advanced eye care, but they were looking for another optometrist to join the group. So I saw my first patient 3 weeks ago and every day since has been wonderful. I knew it was the right fit when going to work hardly felt like work at all.

One of the things I love most about EYESPOT is that the collection of frames is different than you would find anywhere else. Browsing the elegantly displayed gallery you'll find independent eyewear lines that are selected by our highly experienced Managing Optician based on their aesthetic distinction and quality of craftsmanship. As an example, the sunglasses I'm wearing below are by Kio Yamato, a luxury eyewear line named after an ancient Japanese province whose frames are hand-made with innovative hinge and temple designs making the frames durable but also incredibly beautiful.
