Into the Mystic, Connecticut

Mystic Connecticut

Only an hour and a half from Boston, Mystic, Connecticut is a beautiful coastal New England town with fun to be had for the entire family.  Brian, Bennett and I met my sister and her family in Mystic for the weekend. They live in New York; so Mystic was the perfect place to meet in the middle. We had so much fun exploring the town on Saturday, and then I attended a continuing education seminar on Sunday.

We started our day off at the Mystic Aquarium which turned out to be one of the coolest aquariums any of us had ever been to.  The beluga whale exhibit was definitely a favorite of the group.  The kids got a kick out of seeing the whales so closely underwater as well as on the surface of the tank.

How adorable is my sister's newest baby?!?!  The kids were all so well behaved, and it was truly heart warming to see them all play together.

After the aquarium we ate at Mystic Pizza.  The pizza was delicious and, as the actual setting of the 1980's Julia Roberts movie, they actually had the film continuously playing on their flat screen.  The staff was so family friendly; it definitely shouldn't be missed if you're visiting the area!

After lunch we headed to Mystic Seaport,  a huge waterfront indoor / outdoor maritime museum.  It was built with the aim to let visitors experience life in a seaside village in the mid 1800's.  Staff was dressed in costume and was so knowledgeable about the history of the time.  There are multiple play areas and hand-on learning experiences for kids.

These pictures were taken in the Children's Museum within the Seaport.  It was so great to find a space for the babies to crawl around and play.  They really had kids of all ages in mind when planning this Seaport museum!

There was so much cousin love this weekend my heart was literally exploding.  I wish they were able to get together more often.  Fortunately, there are a few upcoming family events so the kids will soon be reunited!

We are definitely going to make a trip to Mystic, CT at least an annual tradition. Being early Fall, the weather was truly exceptional, and I couldn't imagine a better time to go. There was a slight breeze to keep us comfortable during all our walking, but it was still warm enough to dine al fresco on all the restaurants' waterfront patios.

Historic downtown Mystic had so many unique, locally-owned shops and an abundance of restaurants that all had fantastic looking menus.  Although we can't wait to try new places on future visits, we had dinner at Engine Room and I can't envision a dining experience being any better.  Their beer, wine and cocktail lists were unique and well curated, and everyone agreed their food was incredible.  The restaurant had strong southern influence; so it was a pretty good bet that I would love it.  I may or may not have had the chicken and waffles.

Some other spots we loved were Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream Cafe for (what else) ice cream, Sift Bake Shop for the best macaroons I have ever had in my life and Mystical Toys for fun and spoiling the kiddos.

I can't believe we live only an hour and a half from this beautiful town, and this was only our first time there.  I can't speak more highly of its charm, and it truly is a magical place to take your family!!

And if you want to shop this post..

My pull-over is from Old Navy last year but here is pretty much the same version available this season.  My white jeans are also from Old Navy.  My Bag is Longchamp and I'm rarely found without it since there is so much room for Bennett's gear.  Bennett is wearing a denim one piece from Gap (currently 40% off with code HAPPY).
